high speed chase in Tampa causes innocent death

Last night my girlfriend was coming back to Tampa from Fort Myers. She call me to tell me that a SUV and a few police cars passed her on the Skyway Bridge going over a hundred miles an hour. She said it was like being in a scene from the show cops. This morning on Bay News 9 I saw a story on that police chase and someone got killed because the SUV ran a red light.
I would like to know what is the policy for police chases. This could have been my girlfriend who got killed because a teen stole a car and was wanted suspect for some robberies. What is more important catching a robber or someones life.
The Skyway bridge is two lanes and for six vehicles to pass by you going over a hundred miles an hour puts your life at risk six times. She saw the white Lexus with the suspect go by then she saw a few police cars and one SUV police vehicle speed by her.
Besides the 16 year old going to jail for vehicle homicide the police should be sued by the poor guy’s family who got killed.
I am sorry to say there must be a better way to catch criminals and not put more people at risk. A stolen car is a material thing that can be replaced a life is precious to many.
